1. Who this policy covers

This Privacy Policy explains how personal information is handled in connection with OpenDirectory.in, a directory of Indian Internet resources operated by Megri Soft Limited. It covers browsing the directory, searches, website suggestions, listing modification requests and correspondence with us.

It does not cover websites listed in the directory. Their owners are responsible for their own privacy practices. Read the relevant website's policy before sharing information with it.

2. Information associated with your use of the directory

The information involved depends on how you use the website:

  • Website submissions and changes: the website title, URL, category and description, together with the contact name and email address entered in the form.
  • Correspondence: your email address, message, attachments and information needed to respond to a question, correction request or complaint.
  • Technical records: the server and hosting environment may record IP addresses, request times, requested URLs, browser information, referral information and errors for operation and security.
  • Searches: search words are sent to our search script. Because the search form uses URL parameters, search terms can also appear in your browser history and server request logs.

Please do not put passwords, payment details, identity documents, financial account information, health information or other sensitive personal details in submissions or search fields. If you submit another person's contact details, make sure you are authorised to provide them.

3. Public listings and private contact information

A directory listing is intended to display the website title, description and URL within a category. These public details can be viewed, copied, indexed or quoted by search engines and other third parties, including AI services that access public web pages.

The contact name and email fields are collected for administration of the submission, rather than for display in the public listing. Avoid including personal contact information in a title or description unless you intend it to be public. If you find personal information published unintentionally, contact us with the affected page URL.

Removing or correcting information on our website does not automatically remove copies held by search engines, archives or other independent services.

4. Why information is used

Information is used as needed to assess submissions, maintain listings, respond to enquiries, communicate submission decisions, correct directory information, investigate misuse, protect the website and meet applicable legal obligations.

Providing contact details for a directory suggestion does not by itself amount to consent to unrelated marketing. Where a separate optional use requires consent under applicable law, that use should be explained and consent obtained separately.

Processing is subject to the requirements of Indian law that apply to the particular activity and are in force at the relevant time. This policy is not a representation that every provision of a newly enacted privacy law has already commenced.

5. Cookies, browser storage and additional services

Cookies are small files stored in your browser; websites can also use other browser storage. Their use depends on the functions and third-party services enabled on a website. You can inspect and manage stored website data through your browser settings.

This policy does not treat the absence of a cookie banner as proof that no cookies are used. If optional analytics, advertising, embedded media or similar tracking services are enabled, we will provide information about their purposes and any choices or consent required by applicable law before using them.

Blocking browser storage may affect functions that depend on it. Visiting an external website through a directory link may result in that website setting its own cookies.

6. Service providers and other disclosures

Operating the directory can involve hosting, email, maintenance and security providers. Where a provider handles personal information on our behalf, access should be limited to what is needed for the service and subject to appropriate obligations.

Information may also need to be disclosed in response to a lawful request, to meet a legal obligation, to investigate misuse, or to establish, exercise or defend legal rights. We will assess the request and the information needed for that purpose.

A change in ownership or operation of the service may involve transfer of relevant records, subject to applicable law and appropriate notice where required. Public listing content is distinct from non-public submission contact details.

7. Retention and deletion

Submission records and correspondence may need to be retained during review and for later corrections, follow-up, dispute resolution and administrative records. Technical records and backups have different operational needs. Personal information should not be retained longer than needed for its purpose or an applicable legal requirement.

You can ask us about information associated with your submission or request deletion. We may need to retain limited records where law, security, a dispute or another applicable obligation requires it. Deleted information may remain in backups until those backups are replaced or expire.

8. Security and service locations

We seek to protect personal information through access restrictions and appropriate administrative and technical safeguards. No internet transmission or storage system is completely secure. Use care when sending information by email and do not send sensitive documents unless specifically requested through an appropriate process.

Where hosting, email or support arrangements involve handling information outside India, that handling remains subject to applicable restrictions and safeguards. Contact us if you need information about the location of processing relevant to a particular request.

9. Your requests and privacy choices

You may contact us to ask about personal information associated with your submission, correct inaccurate contact information, request deletion, raise a privacy concern or withdraw consent for an optional use where consent is relied on. The rights available and any exceptions depend on the law applicable to the request and its commencement.

To request a public listing correction, use Modify Listing. For privacy requests, email directoryindia@gmail.com with the subject OpenDirectory Privacy Request. Include the website URL and explain the requested action. We may ask for proportionate information to verify your authority; please do not send an identity document with your first email.

We will assess requests under applicable law and explain any verification requirements or reasons we cannot fully act on a request. Nothing here restricts a right to approach a competent authority where that right is available.

10. Children and submissions

The submission and modification forms are intended for adults acting for themselves or an organisation. Children should not provide their personal contact details through these forms. A parent or guardian who believes a child's information has been submitted can contact us to request review and removal where appropriate.

11. Updates to this policy

We may revise this policy when website functions, handling practices or legal requirements change. The revised version will display an updated date. Where a material change requires further notice or consent under applicable law, we will follow that requirement. Updating a policy does not replace consent where consent is required.

12. Privacy enquiries and complaints

Send privacy questions or complaints to the operator below. Please include enough detail to identify the concern without disclosing unnecessary personal information.
