About OpenDirectory.in
OpenDirectory.in is an Indian human-edited directory of the Web. It brings together websites and Internet resources connected with India, arranged by subject and region so visitors can explore the information that matters to them.
The directory is an initiative by Megrisoft, an IT/ITES company based in Chandigarh, India. Volunteer editors at Megrisoft review website suggestions and help maintain the directory's categories, titles, descriptions and links.
OpenDirectory.in is a 100% free directory. There is no charge to browse or search the directory, suggest a website, request a listing correction or use the directory's data. Free submission gives every suitable website an opportunity to be considered; it does not guarantee acceptance.
History: more than two decades of discovery
OpenDirectory.in began in March 2005, with the aim of making Indian Internet resources easier to find through a browsable directory. The project reached its 20-year milestone in March 2025 and continues into its third decade.
The directory follows the human-edited approach associated with the early Open Directory movement: organise websites into meaningful categories and provide a useful description alongside each link. OpenDirectory.in is a separate initiative operated by Megrisoft, rather than an official service of another directory.
As the Web changes, the work of a directory continues. Websites move, services evolve and older links can become outdated. Maintaining a useful collection means reviewing suggestions, responding to corrections and improving how visitors navigate the resources.
Our purpose
Our purpose is to provide a straightforward starting point for exploring Indian websites. A directory lets visitors browse a subject or region without needing to know the exact website name first.
- Make Indian resources easier to discover: connect visitors with information about businesses, education, public services, culture, communities and other subjects.
- Give websites context: place a resource in a category and describe what it offers in clear, factual language.
- Support regional exploration: help visitors find resources associated with Indian states, cities and local interests.
- Keep access free: remove submission and browsing fees as barriers to participation.
- Invite community input: use suggestions and issue reports to help improve the directory.
Each public listing is deliberately simple: a website title, description and URL. We focus on helping people find relevant resources rather than presenting a listing as a rating, certification or endorsement.
How volunteer editing works
Volunteer editors at Megrisoft consider whether a suggested website is relevant to the directory, provides useful content and fits the selected category. They may adjust a title or description for clarity, choose a more suitable category, or decline an unsuitable or duplicate suggestion.
Human editing adds judgement to the organisation of the directory, but it cannot guarantee that every linked page remains accurate, safe or available. Visitors should assess a website independently before sharing personal information, making a purchase or relying on important advice.
Review times can vary with the number of suggestions and the work required. Please send a website suggestion once and use the modification form for an existing listing.
Free access to directory data
There is no fee to use OpenDirectory.in's directory data. This free-use approach reflects the project's purpose of helping Indian resources reach a wider audience.
Free access does not remove any attribution, licence or third-party rights that apply to particular material. Reuse should respect those rights, protect non-public contact information and avoid placing an unreasonable load on the website. See our Terms of Use for the applicable conditions.
If you need clarification about reusing a collection of listings or arranging bulk access, email directoryindia@gmail.com with a description of your intended use.
Report an issue
Your reports help us identify problems that may otherwise go unnoticed. Please tell us about broken links, incorrect descriptions, duplicate entries, inappropriate content or a website that has changed its purpose.
Email directoryindia@gmail.com with the directory page URL, the affected website address and a brief explanation. Include relevant evidence where useful, but avoid sending unnecessary personal or sensitive information.
For changes to a website you manage, use Modify Listing. For other questions, visit our contact page. Reports will be considered as part of maintaining the directory.
Suggest a site
Know an Indian website that would be useful to others? You can suggest it for inclusion at no cost. Search the directory first to check whether it is already listed, then choose the closest category for its main subject or regional focus.
Use the website's actual name, its working URL and a short description of the information or services visitors will find. Avoid promotional slogans, repeated submissions and keyword-heavy titles.
Read our website submission guidelines before completing the form. All suggestions are subject to editorial review, and a free submission does not guarantee publication, search rankings or inclusion in AI-generated answers.
Privacy and terms
Our Privacy Policy explains how information associated with submissions, searches and enquiries is handled. Our Terms of Use explains the conditions for using the directory, submitting material and reusing directory content.
External websites have their own policies and terms. A listing in OpenDirectory.in does not make Megrisoft responsible for an external website's activities or transactions.
